A technology career can ask you to learn finance, too.
FinOps is a cross-functional discipline concerned with making cloud spending visible, understandable, and useful for decisions. It lives in the membrane between engineering, finance, procurement, operations, and leadership.
I came to FinOps from an engineering and technology background, which meant some of the finance and accounting language initially felt foreign. Learning it reminded me of a principle I keep returning to: uncertainty is not a verdict. It is a starting condition.

Useful capabilities to explore
Cloud fundamentals, cost-allocation concepts, basic financial vocabulary, spreadsheet/data analysis, reporting, stakeholder communication, and the ability to investigate discrepancies without panicking when the numbers refuse to behave.
A small experiment
Take a sample cloud-billing dataset or your own low-risk sandbox bill. Categorize the costs, identify the largest drivers, and write a one-page explanation for a nontechnical decision-maker.
That exercise combines several muscles the field actually uses.
