Sometimes the most useful question is simply: where?
GIS and geomatics are broad fields concerned with location, measurement, spatial information, and the technologies we use to understand the physical world. They can connect maps, fieldwork, databases, engineering, remote sensing, software, infrastructure, environment, and public decision-making.
This was one of my earliest professional worlds. I studied Geodetic Engineering and later worked with surveying, GIS, spatial data, web mapping, infrastructure, research, and disaster-related applications. One thing I still appreciate about the field is how easily it crosses boundaries: a map can be engineering, data analysis, communication, and decision support at the same time.

Useful capabilities to explore
Spatial thinking, coordinate systems, desktop GIS, vector and raster data, cartography, data analysis, and basic spatial databases. Depending on your direction, you might also explore GNSS/GPS, remote sensing, web GIS, Python, or JavaScript. Professional surveying and geodetic practice may have local licensure requirements.
A small experiment
Choose a question with a location component, such as access to hospitals, public transport, hazards, schools, or green spaces. Find a public spatial dataset, open it in a GIS tool, and create one map that helps answer the question.
Then write a short explanation of what the map makes easier to notice. You do not have to understand the whole geospatial universe before entering it.
